    Ryan Smyth

    //

    Ryan Alexander Borden Smyth was born on February 21, 1976 in Banff, Alberta to parents Jim and Dixie Smyth. Ryan, joined by brothers Kevin and Jared, spent his early years golfing in the summers and skiing the world-renowned slopes of Banff while a passion for the game of hockey was beginning to burn inside him like a wildfire. Ryan played his minor hockey in the Banff Bears Minor Hockey Program culminating with being selected by the Western Hockey Leagues Moose Jaw Warriors in the second round of the WHL Bantam draft. After getting drafted by the Warriors, Ryan moved to Caronport, Saskatchewan at the age of 15 to play for the Caronport Cougars before joining the Warriors full time the following season. During his junior career, Ryan spent three years with the Moose Jaw Warriors scoring 105 points during the 1993–94 season. Smyth was then drafted 6th overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by his favourite team the Edmonton Oilers. That year he played only three games for the Oilers, as he stayed for the majority of the year in Moose Jaw. He spent 12 seasons with Edmonton before being traded to the New York Islanders at the trade deadline in 2007. As an unrestricted free agent in the subsequent off-season, he signed a five-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. After two seasons with the Avalanche, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in July 2009. On June 26, 2011, Ryan finally came home as he was re-acquired by the Edmonton Oilers. Ryan officially announced his retirement from the NHL on April 11, 2014 skating his last game as Edmonton Oiler. Ryan represented Canada in international competition on numerous occasions. He has won gold medals at the 1995 World Junior Championship, 2002 Winter Olympics, 2003 and 2004 World Championships, as well as the 2004 World Cup. Having served as captain of Canada's World Championship team for a team record, six years (2001–05 and 2010), he earned the nickname "Captain Canada." Smyth is also Canada's all-time leader in games played at the tournament. He played a record 90 games for Hockey Canada while becoming the only player in hockey history to win gold in the Olympics, World Cup, World Championships (2x), World Juniors, and Spengler Cup. Giving back to the community has always and continues to be one of Ryan’s biggest passions. The Stollery Children’s Hospital holds a special place in his heart. He has spent countless hours visiting patients and helping raise funds for the hospital. Through all of his accolades, in Ryan’s eyes his biggest accomplishment is his family. He met the love of his life Stacey at the age of 17 when he played in Moose Jaw. They married in 1998 and have 4 beautiful children, Isabella, Elizabeth, Alexander, and Gabrielle.
